Local Legend

Legendary Sussex fundraiser, The Strolling Saxon (Gavin Collins), set off in the early hours of 21 June to raise much needed funds for East Grinstead foodbank.

Accompanied by volunteers from the food bank, The Strolling Saxon walked 26.2 miles visiting landmarks around the town. Among the sites Gavin will be visiting are the historic High Street, Sackville College, East Court, and Queen Victoria Hospital. Throughout his epic walk, he will be wearing his Saxon Chain Mail armour weighing a total of 30 – 35 kilogrammes (66 – 77 Lbs) and carrying his shield.

Gavin, who has had his own brave journey of recovery from a car crash that left him with nerve damage down the whole of the left side of his body, wants to encourage the whole town to get behind him as he knows just how important any money raised will be. He said of his marathon, “East Grinstead Foodbank is there for anyone in the town who made need it, and that’s why I want to be there for them.

“Each volunteer gives their time to provide a warm and welcoming environment where people can receive emergency food. But to continue to do this they need money to buy stock if donations of food aren’t enough, they need to pay for their premises, and they provide a whole range of services beyond food that all need funding.

“I am proud to support them, and I hope that if you can, you can support me on my latest epic The Strolling Saxon challenge!”

Mike Barlow, manager at East Grinstead foodbank, said: “The support of The Strolling Saxon is very special for us. He is well known in the community for his activities, and your support of him will be invaluable.

“The food bank supports local individuals and families in crisis who can’t afford to put food on the table and we want to make sure that we can continue to do this for as long as it is needed. But we can’t do that without the support and generosity of our community.

“We are grateful to Gavin, and to everyone who gets behind him on his epic quest. Without you all, we simply couldn’t continue to do what we do.”
