The Hardship Times brings directly to Westminster

19th November 2024

During the summer, people across the UK shared their experiences of hope and hardship onto tablecloths in their communities. The stories revealed the devastating consequences of a social security system that’s failing to protect people from going without the essentials, as well as a growing movement for change which is calling on the UK government to take urgent action on hunger. Thank you very much to everyone who shared their story and organised table decoration events. Over 500 events took place over the summer.

For the next step of the campaign, on 20 November, food banks, people with lived experience of hardship and anti-poverty charities, alongside LadBaby and Levi Roots, will be gathering at Parliament Square to unveil a bold new newspaper, The Hardship Times.

This special, one-off publication is filled with stories of hope and hardship that have been gathered from across the UK by food banks, charities, faith groups and businesses. They reveal the devastating consequences of a social security system that’s failing to protect people from going without the essentials, as well as a growing movement for change which is calling on the UK government to take urgent action on hunger.

Now, as Trussell publishes its latest data on the number of parcels food banks in their community provided to people facing hardship, these often-hidden stories will be given a powerful platform as The Hardship Times brings them directly to Westminster. Though Parliament Square will be transformed into a hub of activity, the collective voice of hundreds will be clear – the UK government must take immediate action on hardship and hunger.

In addition to activities at Westminster, over 120 food banks have signed up to receive newspapers to give out in their communities and are raising awareness on social media. Thank you so much for all your support.
