The need for emergency food does not appear to be diminishing.
We support local individuals and families in crisis who cannot afford to put food on the table, referred to us by local agencies, (such as Children & Family Centres, local primary and secondary schools, churches, hospitals, Citizens Advice, and GP Surgeries).
Since we started with a few food boxes in a garage in East Grinstead in December 2012, we have now helped over 8,000 people, averaging over 30 people per week. In the year to 31st March 2019, we helped 1,622 adults & children from this Foodbank; the good news was that the number of children helped was done 17% on the previous year but we saw a 13% increase in the number of single adults needing help and an 11% in the number of referral vouchers fulfilled. Nationally, in late April 2019, the Trussell Trust has reported a 19% increase in helped provided to over 1.6 million.
In December 2018, we packed and distributed 180 Christmas bags (an increase of 49) and in March 2019 we packed 121 Easter bags (up from 74 in Easter 2018). In March and April 2019 we helped on average 35 Adults and Children per week, so the need, sadly, is not reducing, hence why we are so grateful for all the continuing donations!
We are located in the Jubilee Community Centre on Charlwoods Road, East Grinstead and are open 3 times a week: Mondays from 1pm to 3pm, Wednesdays from 10am to 12 midday & Fridays from 1pm to 3pm.
In addition to giving clients food and household items sufficient for more than 3 days in exchange for a red voucher, we also talk to Clients and try to understand their needs and situation, and – where appropriate – look to ‘signpost’ them to other groups, such as Christians Against Poverty (CAP), Citizens Advice, Mid-Sussex Furnihelp or the ‘Tasty Team’ who may also be able to assist.
